뜻은 저항하다, 거의 불가능하다, 무시하다, 허용하지 않는다, 도전하다 등이다.

defy description 으로 함께 쓰이면 형언할 수 없다는 뜻을 가진다.

뜻이 다양해서 영영사전을 찾아보니, 

to refuse to obey a person, decision, law, situation, etc.

사람, 결정, 법, 상황 등에 따르기를 거부하다. 정도로 해석될 것같다.

defy description 에서 description이 설명이므로 설명하기를 거부하다. 설명하기 어렵다. 형언할 수 없다. 정도로 연결해서 이해하면 될 것으로 보인다.
